Must visit - speakeasy bar in Shanghai, Speak Low
Speak Low is ranked 7th on the list of Asia's 50 Best Bars 2019. Raved by many and after my visit, I understood why.
Hidden behind the facade of a bartender tools shop, I wasn't quite sure if I've gotten the right address. Walked in and checked with the friendly gentleman seated at the counter who simply just ushered us in.
We were there around 6pm and my-oh-my. I was glad that we went early! No queue at all. We visited on 20th May (520) which essentially was the Chinese Valentines Day. It would have been packed with couples if we went there late.
1st floor was the facade; 2nd floor was a bar infused with some western elements; 3rd floor was where the magic lies. To get into the bar on the 3rd floor, you've got to go through a hidden door. A hidden bar, within a hidden bar!
Won't spoil the fun for you, just in case you ever visit the place but it involves a map.
FOOD WAS AMAZING. Who would have thought mapo tofu 麻婆豆腐 and foie gras 鹅肝 would have gone so well as pizza topping! *mindblown
It's a shame I left it too long to write this post. Now I don't exactly remember the drinks we've ordered. But I could tell the bartender had some inspiration from the Japanese culture.
Most definitely will recommend this place!
